A Record

An A record is part of the DNS zone file that establishes what IP address to associate with a given hostname.  So, for example, let’s say that you have a website called mydomain.com.  By editing the A record you can manipulate what IP address is assigned to a domain name.

In general, most people will never need to edit this information as most domain registrars automatically handle the IP address assignment through the nameserver information.

Anonymous FTP

An anonymous FTP is public or common FTP setting that allows anyone access to an ftp server.  Generally, the user login is either “anonymous” or “ftp”.  Then the password can be anything so any password will work.

Anonymous FTP’s are not widely used by individual hosting accounts as most want to keep the general public out.  However, public sites like libraries may make use of public FTP’s to distribute catalogs or any other large files.

Applet

Applets are commonly considered to be small Java programs that are found on HTML webpages.  These small Java programs differ from full Java programs not only in size but in features.  Applets have restrictions on what it can access on local computers when activated in a web browser where full Java programs will be able to connect with different devices on a local computer.

ASP

ASP is short for Active Server Pages.  ASP is basically HTML web pages that have special scripting included in the page to do different things.  Microsoft developed ASP to give web developers an alternative to standard web page development such as PHP.  But ASP cannot run on just any server.  ASP requires Windows based hosting server in order to make the embedded scripts work.
