Search Engine

A Special tool that is used to search through the vast amounts of information and websites on the World Wide Web.  Not all search engines are built the same.  They  The most popular search engine at this time is Google.

Shopping Cart

A software package used in ecommerce to make online shopping for multiple products before finalizing payment.  This mimics the action taken at a physical store where customers accumulate items into a physical shopping cart and proceed to a checkout counter to total their purchases.

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

An Internet standard protocol for email handling and transmission.  SMTP is used by client side applications for sending email only.

Spider

Also known as a web crawler or bot.  Spiders have many different uses and purposes but generally they are utilized by search engines to review website content to provide the most up to date indexing of the website in search engine results.

Secure Shell (SSH)

A network protocol that provides a secure connection between networked devices.  SSH is used mainly today in a Linux or Unix environments and commands are done in simple text.  So, in web hosting, SSH allows a secure connection from the home pc to the web account to run and manage the hosting service.

Subdomain

domains have a organizational hierarchy and subdomains comprise any level below the root or primary level.  Subdomains are commonly used to differentiate different groupings.  For example a movie website called supermovies.com might have different subdomains for different movie genre’s.  So there may be a action category and so the subdomain could be action.supermovies.com
